Two weeks!  A full two weeks in the San Diego weather and TWO WEEKS OUT of the Minnesota weather… what a deal!  Our niece is in the navy, and when she’s at sea, there’s a whole apartment just sitting there … so away we went!!  Her place, her car, our time!

Day one found us getting up at our motel in Minneapolis and catching our plane at 7:10 … so we were up at 4:30.  Off we go into the wild west blue yonder, landing in San Diego at the Lindberg airport at 9:15 their time.  (One thing they don’t tell you – landing in San Diego is from the southeast, and you come into town at or below building level…. as we came down, I could look STRAIGHT OUT the window and look directly at the buildings…. very odd….) Catch a cab, drop us off and settle in by 10:30, and then off to the beach (20 blocks away) … stroll the boardwalk a little bit, and then lunch at the WORLD FAMOUS, right there on the beach.  Crabcakes for me, some kind of shrimp thing for Wilma… and yes, a very California cute waitress…. good food for sure!

More beach walking time… we got in the car and headed south a bit to Belmont Park and beach area…. more ocean, a jetty to the south, and a sunset to stun the eyes and soul.  We walked a great deal today between the two beaches – sand in the shoes and everything.  We stopped at a Ralph’s Grocery store to get a few things for the fridge — breakfast stuff, some fruit, some bread and milk — wine, beer — you know, the necessities of being on vacation…. a very nice first day!

Our second day found us up and about, headed to Coronado…. 1 17 cor hotel cupula wwe were staying in the north side of San Diego proper, and to get to Coronado, we had to go considerably south, cross the big bridge, and then navigate across the point to the beach.  Heck, I thought it would take a good 45 minutes.  Well, this was the lesson: San Diego is pretty dang compact.  We got there in 25 minutes.  Settled ourselves on the beach and enjoyed the sun, the air force jets and helicopters in the air, the people-watching, the waves…. very nice indeed…. Took a walk around the Coronado hotel — opulent, rich, old school service and class… and unaffordable lunch prices … so we headed further away from the beach and caught a nice lunch at a small Italian restaurant …. sidewalk table and all.  SONY DSC

Back to the beach again for a bit more sun, and then back into town, where we navigate our way to the Fish Market restaurant on the harbor.  Very nice view, a good drink (Wilma’s favorite: a margarita with all the fixin’s….) and a chance to visit with a couple from Massachusetts … (she was  a tall Scandinavian, he a sauna/hot tub salesman….) … we came out to find a parking ticket….seems we weren’t in the space squarely enough… what a pile of crap THAT was….. drove over to a park on the harbor for another sunset viewing.  All very nice……
